Youth Hockey Training Tips – Goalie Drills
While it doesn’t seem like the most glamorous position to a child on a youth hockey team, there are few roles that are as crucial as the goalie. You need only consult your SatelliteTV-HQ service and watch a few hockey channels to confirm that if you don’t believe me.
Defense and Offense are all key, to be sure, but when it comes down to the line it’s all up to the goalie and you need to make sure that the goalie of your youth hockey team understands their responsibility by understanding the four fundamentals of being a goalie. These fundamentals are the butterfly position, shooting, catching and in some rare cases, diving.
Butterfly Position
This is the typical stance of the goalie. You spread out your body and make as much of a wall as you can with your padded frame. Knowing how to move subtly in this position requires some practice but it isn’t impossible.
Shooting
Even the goalie has to shoot from time to time and while there may never be a time where the goalie leaves his post to make the game-winning shot, knowing how to fire the puck out of your territory is of crucial importance.
Catching
The goalie’s glove is shaped in such a way that makes catching a speeding puck ideal. A few practice drills that focus on catching will improve the timing and hand-eye coordination necessary to make the catch and save the game.
Diving
While not always your best course of action for the potential it has to leave the goal open, diving on the puck can help both smother the enemy offense and gain control of the puck. Knowing when and where is all part of the game.
